Bill Burmester,  M.A., MFT

In private practice in Berkeley, California, I work with individuals (teens and adults), couples, and groups on recovering from trauma. Whether it’s the recurring intrusive impact of specific overwhelming events from the past or the cumulative compromising effect of inadequate nurture and protection in childhood, trauma interferes with our freedom to live life in the present. But it can be successfully treated.
Since 1991, I have worked in particular with male survivors of sexual abuse.

From a base of safety, support, and respect, I will work collaboratively with you to pace your pursuit of psychological and somatic healing and growth, drawing on the strengths and resources everyone brings with them into therapy.

  1. In treating the effects of past abuse and neglect I work one-on-one from a trauma-based perspective, mindful of dissociative processes and the ways trauma lives in the body.  My treatment approaches include Mindfulness Practices, EMDR, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Psycho-Physical Therapy, EFT, as well as Contemporary Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

  2. In working with couples I focus on communication skills, drawing specifically from Imago Relationship Therapy, Gottman, and Emotionally-Focused Therapy. With couples my role is more that of coach and facilitator than interpreter.

  3. I offer groups for Men Healing from Sexual Abuse at two levels, beginning with a structured introductory 12-week format, followed by the option of an on-going support/process group.  Even when a group is not currently running, I am interviewing for the next group or for openings in a current one, so please contact me at any time if you are interested.

  4. Two or three times a year -typically at the end of March in the Santa Cruz mountains and at the end of Summer and beginning of Fall in Alta, Utah- I participate as a volunteer facilitator for the Male Survivor Weekends of Recovery (and have done so since 2002).
